Francis Ford Coppola has long been producing interesting wines from California. His wines aren't the typical West Coast giants. Instead they blur the line between lighter, balanced, earth driven Old World wines and fruit-driven low acid behemoths of the New World. Coppola wines tend to present the fruit of the New World with the complexity, earth and finesse of the Old World.
Following in that tendency, the Coppola Diamond Collection Chardonnay splits the difference between the two styles quite well. Made with fruit from Monterey, one of the colder and drier areas in California, the wine is properly balanced, showing guava, mango, apple and lime in a medium-plus body. There is enough minerality present to remind one of cold-climate French wine, and enough fruit to remind one that this is indeed a California wine. The end result of it all: a delicious, nuanced, and remarkably affordable chardonnay.
